For more than 50 years, Spears Design Build Group has built more than homes. We’ve built relationships. Known throughout DeKalb County for our craftsmanship and care, what truly sets us apart is the people behind every project. From the office to the jobsite, our team has shaped who we are, how we work, and the legacy we continue to build.
As we celebrate five decades as top remodelers in DeKalb and its surrounding areas, we’re taking a moment to shine a light on the team members, past and present, who have dedicated their loyalty and heart to making Spears Design Build Group the trusted name it is today.
Meet the Faces Behind the Craftsmanship
Our current team brings decades of combined experience, a shared passion for quality, and a commitment to the community. Meet the team that makes it all possible.
The Team Behind the Legacy
Some of the most impactful stories at Spears Design Build Group come from the people who’ve spent decades with us—people who’ve grown with the company, passed down knowledge, and left a lasting mark on our culture.
“Once you’re part of the Ken Spears family, you always have a place here.“
Take Lena Cribben, who began working with us during high school and continued through college. Her connection to Ken Spears went far beyond a part-time job—she later developed a full marketing plan for the company as her college capstone project. Or Denise Rohrer, whose loyalty and quiet commitment helped anchor the company during seasons of growth and transition.
Then there’s Jerry Stark, a former employee recognized by Northern Illinois University as an outstanding alumnus from their School of Engineering. When he named Ken Spears and Mr. Bob as the most influential people in his life, it wasn’t just a proud moment—it was a reminder of how lasting the impact of mentorship and camaraderie can be.
Even as paths diverge, those relationships stay strong. We run into former team members at community events or welcome them back as clients.
A Culture That Builds People First
At Spears Design Build Group, company culture isn’t something you post on the wall—it’s something you live every day.
We believe that when people feel valued, supported, and seen, they do their best work. That’s why we’ve created an environment where every employee, no matter their role, is encouraged to grow in their craft. Our internal recognition program ties everyday accomplishments back to our four core values, creating a culture where excellence isn’t just expected—it’s celebrated.
We also bring our entire team together regularly for company-wide meetings—sometimes over a plate of delicious food. These gatherings offer a space for transparency and collaboration, where each department shares their current projects and celebrates wins—big and small.
“Whether someone stays five years or fifty, we want them to grow and feel proud of what they’ve built here.”
Some of our most meaningful moments happen outside the office. Whether it’s tailgating at NIU football games, marching in the Pumpkin Parade alongside our Sycamore clients, or sharing laughs at a bowling night, these traditions have helped strengthen our team’s bond—and added a few great stories along the way.

Investing in Growth—At Every Level
Development isn’t a one-time step at KSC—it’s a long-term commitment. From the day someone joins the team, we provide resources to help them grow. That might mean on-site training, professional certifications through NARI or NHAB, or skills courses through platforms like LinkedIn Learning.
“Our legacy isn’t just what we construct—it’s the people we uplift along the way.”
We’ve also evolved our hiring process. Each new role comes with a clear roadmap and onboarding process to ensure that every team member has the necessary tools and support to succeed.
And while we’d love for every employee to stay with us for the long haul, we’re proud when someone leaves to follow a new path—especially if they take what they’ve learned from us and use it to build something meaningful elsewhere.
From Fieldwork to Leadership: Greg’s Journey
Leadership at Spears Design Build Group has always been rooted in understanding the work from the ground up. Greg Spears embodies that philosophy.
“When Greg took the lead, it wasn’t about taking over—it was about carrying forward what matters most.”
Long before assuming his current role, Greg had held nearly every position at the company. His years in the field gave him a deep appreciation for what each role requires—not just in terms of skills, but also in terms of collaboration, communication, and care.
The leadership transition was never rushed. It unfolded gradually over several years, allowing Greg to grow into the role with clarity and confidence. When he officially purchased the company in 2020, it wasn’t just a business transaction—it was a continuation of the values that built Ken Spears Construction in the first place.
Under Greg’s leadership, the company has adapted to new demands while staying rooted in the same values that guided us from day one: integrity, teamwork, and a genuine commitment to serving our clients and our community.
Built by People Who Care
Everything we do at Spears Design Build Group starts with people. Behind every home we remodel is a team that cares deeply—not just about the final product, but about how we get there. Our team is the heart of our legacy—and the reason we’ve been trusted for over 50 years.
“We don’t just remodel houses—we build trust, one team member at a time.”

From long-serving employees who helped shape our company’s foundation to the new hires learning the ropes with fresh enthusiasm, our team is the heart of Spears Design Build Group. We’ve always said we build with purpose. That means more than tools and materials—it means trust, accountability, and a commitment to making life better for our neighbors in DeKalb County.
