Investing in the Next Generation Through the Heavy Metal Summer Experience

This summer, Spears Design Build Group had the privilege of participating in the Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE), a nationally recognized program that introduces high school students and recent graduates to rewarding careers in the skilled trades through hands-on learning and real-world industry experiences. The program is designed to help students explore career pathways while working alongside experienced professionals and gaining valuable exposure to the construction industry.

We were honored to be invited by DeKalb Mechanical to participate in the DeKalb-area camp, held June 1-12, and to spend time with a group of 32 students ranging in age from 16 to 19. During our day with the students, the Spears team led hands-on demonstrations and activities focused on door installation and basic drywall finishing, providing participants with an introduction to some of the skills used every day in residential remodeling and construction.

What stood out most was not just the students’ willingness to learn, but their enthusiasm and engagement throughout the day. They asked thoughtful questions, embraced new challenges, and approached each task with curiosity and determination. It was genuinely refreshing to see so many young people eager to learn practical skills and gain firsthand experience working with their hands.

The future of the skilled trades depends on opportunities like these. Programs such as the Heavy Metal Summer Experience help students discover talents they may not have realized they possessed while exposing them to career paths that are both rewarding and impactful. Watching these students engage with the work reinforced just how important it is to continue investing in the next generation of skilled professionals.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce for helping make this experience possible and for supporting workforce development opportunities within our community. We are also incredibly grateful to DeKalb Mechanical for the invitation and for hosting the camp at their facility. Their commitment to introducing young people to the trades is creating meaningful opportunities that will benefit our industry for years to come.

Thank you to the students who participated and brought such positive energy to the experience. We were honored to be a small part of your journey and look forward to seeing where your future takes you.
