A Long Distance Renovation

How often do you hear of a renovation being completed while the homeowners are away, especially an accessible bathroom renovation? Out of state, for that matter.

For these homeowners, that was exactly the situation. While living in New Mexico, they were preparing to move back to Illinois to be closer to family, especially their grandchildren. Before making the move, they wanted to make sure their home was ready for this next chapter.

One of the biggest priorities was the bathroom. Learn more about our accessibility services for renovating and remodels here!

A Space That Needed to Work Better

The existing bathroom simply wasn’t functional for their needs. It required a full redesign to properly accommodate wheelchair accessibility and make everyday use easier and more comfortable.

This meant rethinking the entire layout. The closet, garden tub, shower, and vanity were all removed to open up the space. Doorways were relocated and widened, and pocket doors were added to improve flow and usability.

Every change was intentional, creating a space that feels open, practical, and easy to navigate without sacrificing comfort.

Renovating from Another State

Managing a renovation is one thing. Doing it from over a thousand miles away is another.

Throughout the process, the homeowners relied on clear communication and a strong partnership with the Spears Design Build Group team. Regular updates and thoughtful guidance helped keep everything on track, even without being onsite.

To make selections easier, the team sourced materials both locally in Illinois and in areas near the homeowners in New Mexico. That way, they could still experience finishes in person when it mattered most.

It made the distance feel a lot smaller.

Designed for Daily Life

The finished bathroom balances durability with a clean, welcoming look. Prairie-stained maple cabinetry brings warmth, while Corian countertops offer a seamless, low-maintenance surface. Ceramic tile in a stacked pattern adds subtle texture, and fixtures from Delta and Kohler provide long-term reliability.

More importantly, the space works the way it should, supporting independence and comfort in everyday routines.

Ready for What’s Next

By the time the homeowners returned to Illinois, their home was already prepared for them.

What started as a long-distance renovation became a smooth transition into a new phase of life, closer to family, in a space designed to support it.
