The Challenge
The original second-floor bathroom was small, bland, and difficult to use. A sloped ceiling limited headroom, and the layout left little storage or comfort. The homeowners wanted a space that felt more open, modern, and accessible while keeping a traditional sense of style.
The Transformation
Spears Design Build Group reimagined the bathroom from the ground up, starting with a layout change. By switching the existing toilet and sink location with a new walk-in shower, the space immediately felt more functional. To address the sloped ceiling, we added a dormer, which expanded headroom, created better flow, and allowed for a new Pella double-hung window to bring in natural light.
The new barrier-free shower was designed with both convenience and accessibility in mind. A trench drain ensures smooth water flow, while a clear 3/8″ glass sliding shower door keeps the room feeling bright and spacious.

Thoughtful Craftsmanship During COVID
This remodel came with a unique challenge: it was completed at the start of COVID-19, when safety and limited contact were top priorities. Since the homeowners’ main living spaces were on the first floor, we installed a temporary access door upstairs by removing a window. A portable staircase allowed our crew to enter and exit the project site without going through the rest of the home. Once the work was complete, the window was reinstalled. This innovative approach ensured the family’s safety and peace of mind throughout construction.
The Result
What was once a cramped and outdated space is now a spacious, stylish, and barrier-free bathroom. The traditional elements—like barnwood cabinetry and marble countertops—blend seamlessly with modern upgrades, creating a bathroom that’s both beautiful and functional.
The homeowners now have a light-filled retreat that’s built for comfort today and accessibility for the future.
